Ivan Markovic

Based in Rome, Ivan Markovic is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the archetypal and contemporary outsider. Drawing from a life lived across borders and cultures, Markovic examines the tension between resilience and vulnerability. Whether through the delicate structural integrity of paper, the layered abstraction of mixed-media painting, or the haunting mystery of scale models, his practice seeks to give form to those who exist on the fringes—from the exiled figures of Greek mythology, like Circe, to the non-conformists and dispossessed of the modern world. His art is an invitation to find beauty in the unconventional and a connection to a shared, often fragmented, past.

Born in Montreal to Spanish and Serbian parents and having lived in multiple cities worldwide, Markovic views his past as a mosaic of varying cultures. "History and identity aren't always a straight, clear line," he contends. This sense of being "from everywhere and nowhere" fuels a lifelong inquiry into belonging. By bridging his own history with his fascination for society’s fringe-dwellers, Markovic seeks a deeper understanding of the self—and in doing so, provides a mirror for spectators to begin their own inquiry into identity.
